Using Heidi Across Multiple Devices

Continuing a session across multiple devices.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

You can start a session on your desktop and continue it on your mobile device. This is useful when you need to move between devices during a consultation, for example, transitioning from your desk to the bedside.

In this example, we go from Desktop Web App, onto mobile. The advise given is relevant if you are following another path, ie. mobile to Desktop app, or mobile to widget integration in your EHR.

Starting Your Session on Desktop

  1. Open Heidi on your desktop and begin a new session.

  2. Link the session to an existing patient, or create a new patient record.

  3. Select your session mode — either Dictate or Transcribe

Selecting Transcribe before you begin your session.

Note: You cannot switch between modes mid-session. Transcribe is the standard choice for consultations. Dictate is designed for writing letters or documents without a patient present. If you need to pre-chart, use Cursor Dictate rather than adding pre-charting to the transcript.

For more detail on how these modes differ, see Transcribe, Dictate, and Dictate Anywhere.

Using Cursor Dictate in your Context section

Once you have the right mode set, begin transcribing your consultation as normal.

Stop Your Session on the 1st device.

  1. When you're ready to switch devices, stop the transcription on your desktop.

  2. Wait for the note to finish generating and confirm it has saved before proceeding.

Output full in note

Output full in transcript

You should see the output in your note, and transcript before continuing to your second device.

Continuing Your Session on Mobile

  1. Open the Heidi app on your mobile device.

  2. Navigate to the session you started on desktop.

  3. Tap Resume to continue the session.

  4. Transcribe the next part of your consultation on mobile.

Once you've finished transcribing on mobile, and the note has completed generation the new content will append to the original device. You may need to refresh in the original window.

Viewing the Combined Session

After completing the mobile session, you can return to your desktop and refresh to see the full session, including content from both devices. The transcript will show both parts of the consultation.

Tips to Avoid Issues

  • Always stop transcription on your first device before switching. If you begin transcribing on mobile while the desktop is still transcribing or generating a note, you may encounter conflicts.

  • Wait for the note to fully generate and save on the original device before resuming on the next one. Starting too early on the second device is the most common cause of syncing problems.

  • Check that the microphone is working on your second device before you start your session.
