Creating and Editing Templates

Complete guide to creating and editing templates using the new template editing experience in Heidi.

Get started by simply describing what you need, using one of our suggestions or uploading an example - Heidi will create a template for you. Edit via the example view or by asking Heidi, with instant previews of your changes and version control.

Getting Started:

Creating a new template

From the template library, press the “Create template” button. From here, you can:

1. Describe to Heidi what you want to create

From the templates page, press “Create template”. In the chat box, you can describe to Heidi what type of output you are looking to create. Heidi will create a reusable template with a structure for your output to follow.

2. Upload example notes

Press the paperclip icon to attach example notes you like, and Heidi will create an underlying structure to create a similar output in future sessions.

Accepted files types:

  • .doc, .docx, .pdf

Unaccepted:

  • spreadsheets (csv, xml), .txt files

  • .png, .jpg


Editing a template

You can customise any Heidi template to suit your needs. Simply press the edit icon from the template library, or from the template selection modal.

There are several ways you can edit a template on Heidi.

1. Ask Heidi to make changes

Using the textbox under the template, you can use natural language to describe what you would like Heidi to change about the template, for example “I want the plan to be an issues based numbered list”.

2. Edit the example note

Heidi will generate an example note with a demo transcript. You can edit this example note directly, just like you would a real note in a session, and Heidi will automatically update the underlying structure to reflect your changes.

3. Edit the structure directly

From the structure tab, you can make direct changes to the underlying syntax that controls your template. This requires using special syntax to specify to Heidi where content should go, and any rules that apply to the template. Keep in mind, Heidi will automatically update this structure for you when you edit the example note or ask Heidi.


Version Control

Every time you make a change to your template, such as sending a chat prompt, or making changes to the example, Heidi will create a new version of it. If you are unhappy with the changes made, you can easily revert back to a previous version by selecting it from the version list in the top right. When you press “Save & exit” , whichever version you currently have selected will be saved.

Template Settings

You can adjust your template's visibility settings to determine whether it's shared with your team, the wider Heidi community, or kept private. You can also choose whether it's a note or document template to help you find it easily in your session workflows.

To have your template generate automatically after you stop transcribing a session, set it as your default template.


Tips for Success

  1. Ask Heidi: You can Ask Heidi what you would like to change about your template and continue prompting further changes until you are satisfied with your template.

  2. Editing old templates: You can keep using your existing templates and use the new editor to improve them. Previous versions will be safely stored within your version control if you need to revert.


Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to learn syntax?

A: No! You no longer need to understand any syntax to customise templates on Heidi. However, you still have the option to edit the structure directly with syntax if you prefer.

Q: Can I use my existing templates?

A: Yes! Your existing templates work exactly the same even with this new editing and template creation interface

Q: Does this template editor work in all languages?

A: Yes! It works with all languages supported by Heidi.

Q: How long are versions stored for?

A: Currently, versions are stored indefinitely.

Q: I created a template from an uploaded note, but the example note looks different

A: This is because Heidi first generates a structure based on your note, then recreates a new example using a demo transcript. This creates a more accurate reflection of how your template will behave in a session.

Q: Why do i have to wait for my template to load?

A: Heidi is working hard in the background to update the structure of your template and the corresponding example note whenever you make changes. This can take some time, but makes creating your perfect template far easier, and creates more reliable templates.
