A detailed explainer on getting started with your Athena integration — for both Heidi Scribe and Heidi Comms.
⚠️ To integrate with Athena, you'll need to be on the Practice tier plan (a 30-day free trial is available). This applies to both Heidi Scribe and Heidi Comms.
Setup is different for each product. Heidi Scribe is controlled through the AthenaHealth Marketplace and needs manual approval before you can connect; Heidi Comms only needs your Practice ID.
Find your Practice ID
Both Heidi Scribe and Heidi Comms need your Athena Practice ID to connect. Grab it now and keep it handy — you'll paste it into the setup steps below.
Log in to your athenahealth account.
Click your name in the top-right corner.
Copy the Practice ID from the menu.
Connect Heidi Scribe to Athena
Heidi Scribe runs through the AthenaHealth Marketplace, so you'll request access there first and we'll reach out once it's approved. You'll also need both Athena Clinicals and Athena Collector active on your athenahealth account — if you're not sure whether you do, check with your Practice Manager.
1. Request access via the AthenaHealth Marketplace
Log in to your athenahealth account
Click the Contact Partner box
Fill out the contact form and submit it
💡 We'll send you a second form by email once we've received your request — typically within 2–3 business days. We'll then reach out again once your access has been approved (another 2–3 business days).
2. Connect Heidi Scribe to Athena
Once we've approved your access, finish the connection from inside Heidi.
In Heidi, click Integrations in the left-hand menu
In the integrations dropdown, select Athena
Paste your Practice ID into the Practice ID field. (See Find your Practice ID).
Add your first and last name, exactly as they appear in Athena
Select the correct Athena user from the list
Click Connect to Athena
Use Heidi Scribe with Athena
Pushing notes to Athena
Once connected, your upcoming Athena appointments appear in Heidi automatically. Check the patient in inside Athena, start the encounter, and you'll be ready to push notes into the Assessment section of the patient chart.
Open the Sessions panel from the left-hand menu.
In the Sessions panel, select the Schedule tab.
Click the calendar icon to choose a day. Today's sessions are shown by default.
View the appointments booked for the day, then select the correct patient.
Conduct your consultation as normal.
Review and edit your note as needed.
When you're ready, click Push note to Athena. Heidi will send your note into the Assessment section of the patient chart.
💡 Important: The Push to Athena button is only available for patients who have been checked in to Athena and have an active encounter. You can't create sessions inside Heidi and push them to Athena.
Linking sections of your notes to Athena
Instead of cutting and pasting from the Assessment tab in Athena, you can link specific sections of your Heidi note to matching fields in Athena. Once you push the note, the linked sections drop into the right places automatically.
Linking sections from the editor
Highlight the section of your note you want to link.
Click Link Section in the toolbar.
The linked section will appear in Athena once you push the note.
Click Push to Athena to send the note across.
Linking sections from a template
Open a template in Heidi — create a new one or edit an existing one.
Highlight a block of content in the template editor that you want to link to a section in Athena.
Click the link icon on the right-hand side of the block.
Select the EHR section from the dropdown menu where you want the content to appear (for example, History of Present Illness, Review of Systems, or Assessment / Plan).
The linked section will display in the block. Don't forget to save your template.
If you can't connect
If you see "Maximum Attempts Reached" or "Internal Server Error" while trying to connect, reach out to our support team — we can unlock the integration for you.
Connect Heidi Comms to Athena
Heidi Comms only needs your Athena Practice ID — no marketplace approval required.
With your Practice ID copied, open Heidi Comms and click the Integrations tab.
Scroll down to the Athena section.
Paste your Practice ID into the Practice ID field.
Click Connect to Athena.
If you don't have your Practice ID handy, see Find your Practice ID.
